Group Discussion - An Integral Part of the Job Interview Process
Group discussion is used by HR Departments to check suitability of candidates for filling various
positions in their Organization. The reason why institutes put you through a Group discussion and
an interview after testing your technical and conceptual skills in a written examination is to get to
know you as a person and judge how well you will 'fit in', in their organisation. The Group discussion
tests not only your IQ but also your EQ - how you function as a part of a team. In life you will always
be working as apart of a team or as a member or leader of a network. Therefore you have to have
the ability not only to follow but also to lead. How you interact in a team becomes an important
factor for selection. Leaders have to work in a team and get best results out of their team. They
must have the wisdom to know when to lead, when to follow and when to get out of the way.
Companies conduct group discussion after the written test to check your interactive and
interpersonal skills and how good you are at communicating with other people. GD is conducted to
check how you behave, participate and contribute in a group, how much importance do you give to
the group objective as well as your own, how well do you listen to viewpoints of others and how
open-minded are you in accepting views contrary to your own. Through the GD method it is
convenient to test candidates for their abilities in verbal communication, non-verbal behavior,
decision-making ability, posture, cooperation, body language, flexibility, creativity and ability to
think on their feet. Companies are looking for people who have the ability to work well with people.
It is one of those vital abilities that make the difference between success and failure. As Lee
Iacocca says, there’s one phrase that I hate to see on any executive’s evaluation, no matter how
talented he may be, and that's the line, "He has trouble getting along with other people. To me
that's the kiss of death.”
Apart from using Group Discussion as a tool to assess candidate’s suitability for a job, group
discussion has a lot of advantages and can benefit the participants in many ways.
Some of them are: -
- Helps you understand a subject more deeply
- Improves your ability to think critically
- Helps in solving a particular problem
- Helps the group to make a particular decision
- Gives you the chance to hear other people’s ideas
- Improves your listening skills
- Can change your attitude.
