The O-P-P Strategy
You would have won half the battle in acquiring effective communication and conversation skills if
you learnt the art of asking relevant questions and listening. If you find it difficult to speak or ask
questions in class, group discussions or tutorials, try the Observe, Practice and Participate Strategy.
Observe:
Be observant. Observe how better speakers in the group make critical comments. If a certain
participant impresses you, find out why. Observe how they ask questions while never questioning;
how they praise or criticize the act, never the person; how they are very polite and humble yet firm
when they disagree and how they never interrupt except when it is absolutely necessary. You will
realize that what impresses you most is their good manners, polite behaviour and positive attitude.
Practice
Once you have observed the strategies of an effective conversationalist it is a good idea to practice
conversation in informal settings at home or among friends. Start with asking questions.
Remember, God gave us two ears and one tongue and it is a good idea to use them in the same
proportion. Become good at asking questions and then listening attentively to the response. Ask
what people want to have, what they want to do and above al what do they want to be. Ask them
not only what they ‘think’ about something but how they ‘feel’. It will open up a whole new world.
Ask for their opinions. Ask for information or ask for help.
Participate
Take every opportunity to take part in social/informal discussions as well as more structured/formal
discussion. Start by making small contributions, prepare a question to ask, or agree with another
speaker's remarks. Move on to contributing in a more significant and positive manner.
