FAQs About Recruitment GD
What is the normal duration of a GD?
There is no fixed duration for a GD. Depending on its type and purpose a GD session can last
from 15 minutes to one hour. Generally GD for recruitment is of 15-20 minutes duration.
How many panel members are there to evaluate me?
No hard and fast rule again. There could be as many as 3-4 panel members to evaluate the
performance of candidates.
How much time will I get to prepare the topic after it is announced?
You may or may not get some time to organize you thoughts. 2 –5 minutes is the norm though.
Should I address the panel or the group members?
No.
What is the seating arrangement like?
Seating arrangement is an important part of the preparation. Seats are arranged so that most
participants can have eye contact. It could be semi-circular, round-table, or along side a rectangular
table.
How should I address the other group members?
If you are initiating the discussion, you could do so by collectively addressing the group as
"Friends". Subsequently, you could use names, if the group has had a round of self-introduction.
Remember to jot down names when people are introducing themselves. Don’t mix them up, though.
If I know the topic very well should I keep talking till I have said every thing I know?
No, that will be a mistake. You are part of a discussion group; you are not there to make a speech.
You will not be viewed favourably if you talk too long. Your knowledge of the subject will not go
unnoticed because of the confidence you exude. Part of the skill to be good at GD is your listening
skills. It is the quality and not the quantity of your contribution is the success factor.
Should I encourage others to speak up?
You encourage other people to speak by listening. There is no need to prompt some one to speak
unless he or she was interrupted and you think they had a relevant point to make.
Are the group members supposed to keep track of the time or will the panel keep track?
It would be good if you were aware of the time. Awareness is enough.
Are we allowed to carry a piece of paper during the GD for noting down important points?
Yes. It will be rare occasion when you are not.
