The Future Is Here
The Prime Minister of India, Mr. Manmohan Singh, speaking at a ceremony
to mark fifteen years of reforms, said that "while the belief in market
economy is justified, it must be remembered that markets serve only those
who are a part of it. They have no relevance for those who exist on the
margins of subsistence and who have neither the physical nor the human
resources to participate in them."
The great thinker and communicator that he is, Dr. Manmohan Singh
communicates at many levels. At the global levels it is clear that in a flat
world the whole world has become a single market. Any country which is
not a part of this market will not benefit from it. At the national level India
has striven to become a part of the global market and under the guidance
of the "fabulous five" reformers chose to be served by it. The Prime
Minister's concern has been that while "growth processes, while
generating wealth and prosperity across large sections of societies, have
not been able to generate employment opportunities on the same scale.'"
The question here, at individual level is, "Am I going to be served by the
market? Am I going to be a part of it?
While it is certainly the job of the government to see to it that they direct investments in areas that raises productivity in all sectors
and generates employment opportunities,it is high time that every individual begins to think 'out of the box' come out of the mindset
of being dependant on a job and like true children of the reforms try and set up enterprises that will generate jobs for others. Like
the Prime Minister said, The reform is, in the final analysis, about changing mindsets, We must have the courage to think out of the
box,We must have the courage to think anew, To question old beliefs. To seek new pathways. Will the young enterprising Indian
have the courage to say, " I will be served by the market."
It is time to recognise that the Future is here and we will move with it.
